Our program works by taking a substantial number of different Unicode characters and using them to generate several different styles. Typography purists would say that we are not actually developing new fonts; instead, we create a set of Unicode glyphs that are compatible with Instagram. True, but they are fonts in all but name! Good job, the vast majority of people are not typography purists!
We'll explain Unicode in a bit more detail below.
Digital applications and computers work on a binary system, with all data stored and executed via a series of ones and zeros. Each letter of the alphabet is made up of a binary number.
There is a universal standard for binary codes so that every browser, computer, and program understands each other, but this was not always the case. Before the 1980s, different organizations had differing ideas about what codes should be used for different characters. The Unicode standard changed that and brought everyone together under one unified code.
Unicode is the international body responsible for standardized specifications for alphabets and text characters. Prior to this standardization, computer programmers had to develop translators so that programs using different text codes could communicate.
To begin with, Unicode suffered a considerable amount of push-back from organizations reluctant to amend their coding systems. Having to conform to a unifying standard would cost them time, effort, and money. To get around the reluctance, Unicode introduced a range of symbol sets so that it could communicate with existing systems.
As time went by, the amount of Unicode symbols grew, reaching tens of thousands. Today, the amount of symbols is in excess of one hundred thousand. This large number of symbols includes emojis, which are text symbols too, produced by Unicode’s working group.
Because of the need to cover these legacy programs, the result was us having an enormous and slightly peculiar spectrum of symbols. Thankfully, you can benefit from this incredible array of Unicode symbols, as we have assembled a whole load of fonts that you can use within your Instagram profile. You can have fun, mixing, and matching parts of different fonts to create something eye-catching and unique.
Does it matter? You are getting something unique with which to display your text bio description. If it is a text font or text symbols, generally nobody is any the wiser. However, let's explain it a bit here.
Unicode’s first 128 symbols are known as ASCII characters, these are the characters that go into making the text you are reading in this article. However, Unicode has a lot more than 128 character symbols, with a fair few of them resembling the English alphabet's letters.
This abundance of alphabet-like symbols allows us to create pseudo-alphabets to resemble standard ASCII text. These pseudo-alphabets have differences in terms of bold, italic, or having a different orientation. Pseudo-alphabets are hacks of Unicode, so they are not perfect. We use the one hundred thousand-plus symbols to produce these pseudo-alphabets.
A font is a graphical set corresponding to a selection of Unicode glyphs. Popular fonts include Arial, Times New Roman, and Comic Sans. However, what you copy and paste into your Instagram profile is a symbol that all fonts have the unique letters and cursive text you see on our program are actual characters, just as the letters a, b, c, and so on, are.
This action is where the difference between fonts and character symbols is essential. Why is it important? You can copy and paste characters in your Instagram profile, but you cannot do this with all fonts. Which fonts are accepted by a website comes down to the discretion of the website owner.
For instance, Comic Sans font cannot be copied and pasted into your Instagram - try it, and you will see that you do not get the same looking font. This transformation occurs because you are copying ASCII characters, so you may not get the text effect you think. Depending on how a website has been developed, fonts may appear differently.
Using Unicode character symbols that resemble a particular font, allows us to emulate a font so that it will look exactly the same across all websites, and one that can be copied and pasted into your Instagram profile.
There is an issue in terms of compatibility with some fonts in Instagram. Certain Unicode characters appear to have been blocked by Instagram. The reason for this is not clear-cut, but it could be to prevent people from abusing particular Unicode characters, such as the diacritics in the Glitch Text style of font.
You can generate unique and eye-catching fonts that will make your Instagram profile stand out from the crowd. By entering your text and clicking Show More, you will be presented with an infinite amount of different font options.
If you'd like to share your font creations with us, we would be delighted to hear from you. We'd also love to hear about any ideas you have for text or font generators.
Thank you for reading, and please enjoy generating some unique fonts for an eye-catching Instagram bio.
